How to Say a Thanksgiving Prayer

Thanksgiving is an expression of our mind and heart revealing deep gratitude for what we have in life. We are thankful when God blesses us with good friends, a loving family, a faithful spouse, a flourishing business, a strong ministry, and so much more. We are thankful most of all when we experience God’s goodness, presence, faithfulness, and love as our hearts swell with gladness and thanksgiving.

So how do you say a thanksgiving prayer? Whatever comes from your heart for which you are thankful to God, say it in prayer. It’s like communicating with a dear person whom you are thankful for. You want what’s in your heart to be felt and to reach that person as you communicate to them through your words and sincerity. In the same way, when praying, allow the Holy Spirit to inspire you and lift up your praise and thanksgiving to the Lord. Here is a prayer you can offer:

Heavenly Father, I praise You and magnify You. I lift up my eyes to You the moment I awake. Thank You for this beautiful morning, for allowing me to breathe and spend another day with all my loved ones. Thank You for this life that You have given me in Christ. Every day is meaningful because of You and I am thankful to have You in my life, ABBA, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Moreover, if you are lost for words and don’t know where to start in thanking God, you can also look up Bible Scriptures about thanksgiving and declare them in prayers. Sometimes, there are moments in life where you simply don’t feel thankful at all, but God’s Word is there to help you summon faith and thankfulness as you look to the Word of God. For instance, 1 Chronicles 16:34 says, O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever. Here is a prayer from 1 Chronicles 16:34:

Thank You, Lord, for You are so good to my family and I. Your mercy endures forever. Nothing can ever separate us from Your love, in Christ Jesus. Amen.

A simple prayer of thanksgiving to the Lord can release burdens, sorrows, and negativity. As you become more thankful and choose to be thankful by looking upon the Word of God, the Holy Spirit will show you heaven’s perspectives and the many things to be thankful for in life.

What does the Bible say about Being Thankful?

The Bible tells us that being thankful is God’s will for us in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 says, Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. When we are thankful, our hearts are aligned towards the heavens, because we can clearly see what God is doing, which is something for which we can truly be grateful. Sometimes, even if we don’t understand what God’s plan is, we are constantly aware that He is with us and that His plans are always good and beautiful, which is why our hearts continuously swell with thanksgiving to the Lord.

Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

How to Say a Thanksgiving Prayer

When you are thankful, the Bible shows us that it can be a very powerful thing. Jesus prayed a thanksgiving prayer, and then the two fishes and five loaves of bread were multiplied to feed thousands of people (see Matthew 14:13-31). He also thanked the Father before He raised Lazarus from the dead (see John 11:41-44). When Jesus healed the 10 Lepers, only one came back to thank Jesus for what the Lord had done, and he received not just healing, but wholeness. King David was also a man filled with praise and thanksgiving to God. He was victorious in all his battles against Israel’s enemies.

When we are thankful, we become powerful sons and daughters of God, just like Jesus. Thankfulness causes miracles to be born and makes us whole. When we are thankful, we can walk in Christ’s victory every day. This is why thankfulness is God’s perfect will for us in all circumstances.
