How to Thank God in Prayer

Thankfulness is a sign that our hearts are tuned in with God. The Bible tells us that being thankful in all situations is the will of God (see 1 Thessalonians 5:18). As you are here looking for ways to thank God in prayer, you may be overwhelmed by your thoughts and lost for words, such that you don’t know where to start. To help you give thanks to God for specific things He has done in your life, here are some things to thank God for:

1. Thank Him for each new day.

Waking up early in the morning and thanking God for the life He has given you is one of the easiest things to be grateful about. Not everyone is able to wake up and spend time with their loved ones. So, you can thank the Lord for the life He has given you. Here is a prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for waking me up today. Thank You for giving me another chance to breathe, live in Christ, and spend my time with all my loved ones. As I do Your will today, may I glorify You in all things. Bless this day and keep me in Your presence, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

2. Thank Him for the food on your table.

Poverty is rampant in some countries and some people are forced to go hungry. Having enough food to eat is a blessing. You can thank God before or after your meal, along with your family, for the provision of food on your table. Here is a prayer to offer:

Heavenly Family, thank You for the food on our table. Thank You for blessing us with something to eat today and filling our stomachs to give us the energy to do Your will. Most of all, thank You for this great family to spend each meal with. Bless everyone, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

3. Thank Him for the life of your loved ones.

One of our greatest blessings in life is the people whom we love and treasure. You can thank God for such people in your life. You can be specific about these people, pray for them, and thank God for their lives. For instance, you can give thanks for your spouse, your children, your family, or your best friend. Here is a prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for my spouse and my children. You have blessed me with such a wonderful family that I care for and cherish so much. Thank You for always keeping them safe from harm and for blessing them in every way. I am forever grateful to You for giving me to them, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

4. Thank Him for who He is.

Thanking God for who He is acts as the highest of all praise. When you acknowledge and appreciate God for who He is, it touches His heart, just as it would when someone appreciates and acknowledges you. Thank God today for being so good, so kind, so loving, and so faithful. Bless His heart as you thank the Father for all the things He has done. Here is the prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving meaning and purpose to my life. If You had not loved the world so much that You gave us Your Son, Jesus Christ, I don’t know where I would be right now. Thank You for who You are. There is no one like You and I am blessed to have known You and the Word of God. May I continuously get to know You each day, through Christ Jesus’ name. Amen.

5. Thank Him for the Word of God.

Having to read God’s Word, knowing the promises of God, and having a weapon to thwart all the lies of the enemy is something we can be thankful for to God. Without His Word and the knowledge of it, we would not know God. You can thank Him for His Word and the promises He has written in it that are alive and powerful.

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Word, which gives healing to my soul and health to my bones. Your Word gives me victory against the works of the enemy and reminds me of my identity and authority in Christ Jesus. Thank You for the lives of those who have written those words and made You known to the world. Thank You for the Lord Jesus Christ, the Word incarnate. Amen.

6. Thank Him for your job or education.

Our job is one of God’s greatest blessings to help us in our daily needs and in doing His will. Also, being able to go to school and receive an education helps to give us direction for our future. You can thank God for your job if you are working, or your education if you are still in school. Or you can thank Him for both if you are doing both.

Heavenly Father, thank You for my job, which serves as a great blessing not just for my family and me, but also to the Kingdom of God. Thank You for my employer and the company’s overflowing projects that have improved my skills, creativity, and contribution to the workflow. May You continuously bless the company, their families, and their finances as well, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

7. Thank Him for financial provisions.

You can thank God for His faithfulness through your finances. We know how important money is, especially when it comes to advancing the Kingdom of God and sustaining our daily needs. Bless and thank God for your finances.

Heavenly Father, thank You for keeping my finances stable and flowing. You have been faithful in all areas of my life and I especially want to thank You for my finances. You never fail to provide and supply not just for my needs and my family’s needs, but even for extending help to others as well. May You continuously increase and protect my finances and may You be glorified through the use of my money, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

8. Thank Him for your business.

Your business is a gift from God to become a channel of blessing to many people, such as your workers and those who benefit from your field of services. Thank God for entrusting you with an amazing opportunity to be a blessing through your business.

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving me this business, which has blessed not just my family, but many other people too. You have given me wisdom, a set of skills, and important knowledge to push through with this business and it is now flourishing more than ever. May You always be the center of this business and may Your will always be done, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

9. Thank Him for your ministry.

To have a ministry in God’s kingdom is one of our greatest privileges as His children. Whatever ministry God has entrusted you with, whether it is cleaning the church, collecting tithes and offering, ushering, or being a youth leader, you can thank God for the wonderful privilege to serve His people.

Heavenly Father, thank You for blessing me with such a great ministry in Your kingdom. Thank You for trusting me with the smallest of things, as I know that You will entrust me with even bigger things in the future. I have learned a lot in the ministry and in serving in Your Kingdom. I am thankful for all things, both good and bad experiences. I know that as I remain faithful to things You entrust me with, You will increase me with more, so that I may bless others even more and glorify You, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

10. Thank Him for your pastor, leaders, and workers in the church.

It is a great blessing to have faithful pastors, leaders, and workers in the church you belong to or whom God entrusted you with. You know that they are divinely placed by God in your life to help you in your calling, to aid your walk with God, and to ensure that you finish the race of faith in Christ. Bless them and thank God for them.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the life of my pastor, who continuously guides me, faithfully stays to do Your will, and never gives up on Your people. May You always protect him and his family, provide food on their table, and give him prosperity in health and in his soul, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

There are so many other things for which you can thank God. As your heart swells with gratitude, the Holy Spirit will show you and remind you of the countless things that God has done in your life. Whether it is a small thing or a big thing, praise God and thank Him for it. Gratitude is a powerful thing, because such an act is the will of God. It brings forth heaven on earth as your eyes look towards the things for which you are grateful to God.

In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
