Praying Despite a Busy Life

Praying to God is expected of every Christian—not just because the Bible commands us to pray but primarily because we are in a relationship with God. We will always desire to communicate with our heavenly Father if we are God’s children indeed. Sadly, making time for prayer is one of the issues that most Christians have, even if it shouldn’t be an issue in the first place. It is not just praying that some Christians don’t take time out for, but also reading their Bibles and even making disciples. The most common reason you will hear why they don’t have time is that they are busy with work, studies, or other things. However, the truth is that there is no such thing as “not having time.” Instead, it is an issue of “It’s not my priority.”

The fact that you searched for this article is a good thing. That means you noticed, or the Holy Spirit has convicted you, that you have been neglecting your prayer time with God, and you want to change that. Here is one simple prayer you can pray concerning that:

Heavenly Father, forgive me if I haven’t made time for You. I thank You, Holy Spirit, for convicting me. Empower me, Holy Spirit, to always fight for my prayer time and never be lazy about prayer. I pray that I will become more excited about praying than meeting up with friends or doing my hobbies. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

How do we put God first in a busy life?

We put God first by simply having everything in our lives revolve around God. If a Christian decides to repent and follow Christ, that means they should submit every area of their life under the Lordship of Christ, including their time (Luke 6:46-49). If our time is under Christ’s Lordship, we will make time not just to pray to God but also to do everything we are commanded to do. Putting God first is no different from what Jesus commanded of us: love God with all of our heart, soul, and mind (Matthew 22:37). Loving God with all of our heart, soul, and mind means loving Him above all else. If we love God above all else, then being available to pray should never even become an issue. Not having time to pray is not a matter of poor time management but idolatry. If we have time for work or studies but not for praying, we value work or studies more than God, which is idolatry. Our busy life should adjust for God, not the other way around.

That is something that most Christians struggle with. But now that we are made aware of this, what are we supposed to do? We should repent and stop putting other things above God. Only God deserves our worship, devotion, and praises. Here is one of the ways you can pray if you have found yourself putting other things before God:

Heavenly Father, I am sorry for putting other things in my life above You. I repent from loving other things more than You. Give me the grace, Father, to always love You with all of my heart, soul, and mind and ensure that it is only You that I will love above everything else. Help me to always put You first in everything and make time for You above all. My time shall not revolve around the other areas of my life, but around You alone, Father. Help me to always submit my time under the Lordship of Christ. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

How do you spend time with God on a busy schedule?

Spending time with God is not an issue of time but priority. If you cannot set aside your schedule for work, studies, or other important things, they are your priorities more than God. That is why, if you want to be able to spend time with God despite having a busy schedule, you should fix your concerns and make God your priority over everything else. If God is your priority, no matter how much more work or studies you have to do, you will pray to God and spend time with Him.

Galatians 2:20

I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

Romans 8:5-8

5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.

6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

How do you pray when you are busy?

You can still have a thriving prayer life, even if you are busy. You don’t have to rush anything when praying. Remember that the other things in life should be adjusted around your time with God. So, when you pray to God, even if you are having a busy day, pray as you spend quality time with Him. You can pray to God about whatever concerns you have, the things you want to thank Him for, and even those things that make you busy. We need to be reminded that, at the end of the day, those things we are busy with are temporary while the things of God are eternal. There is more to life than the matters we are busy with, and life is truly about God and not those things. Like Martha in the Bible, we sometimes become troubled or anxious about many things. Hence, we become busy. We forget to fix our eyes on the one thing that matters in life: Christ.

Matthew 6:31-33

31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?

32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.

33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Luke 10:38-42

38 Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.

39 And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word.

40 But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.

41 And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:

42 But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

Heavenly Father, I pray that I will be more consumed by Christ than by earthly things. Help me not to be troubled with the many things in life, which are, in the end, meaningless and temporary. But instead, give me the grace to fix my eyes on Christ, Who is my greatest treasure. Give me the grace to never be anxious about anything but always seek your kingdom first. Remind me, Lord, that life is never about work or studies but about Christ. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

When we say, “making time for God,” it should not be as a doctor is available for a certain patient during his day, like some appointment. We cannot treat God like a patient who makes an appointment with us if we have time to spare for Him throughout our day. He is God. He owns everything, even our time. Therefore, the other things in life should make an appointment and adjust to our time with God.
