A Graduation Prayer for My Son

One of the best things you can do for your son as he graduates, whether from high school, college, or any post-graduate studies, is to pray for him. Praying for your son as he proceeds to the next chapter in life brings to mind the patriarchs of the Bible, like Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, David, etc., as they prayed for and blessed their sons. Of course, it is a different scenario for your son, who is graduating.

Heavenly Father, give me the words to say as I pray thanksgiving and blessing upon my son. May my prayers echo through his life. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

What Do We Pray in a Graduation Prayer?

In a graduation prayer for your son, one of the things you can include is thanksgiving towards God. In (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 16 Rejoice always, 17 pray continually, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.), it is written that we are to rejoice and give thanks to God in all circumstances, whether it is a season of celebration or sorrow. If the Bible commands us to rejoice and thank God even in times of sorrow, how much more in times of celebration, like your son’s graduation?

But why do we need to thank God for our son’s graduation? Well, even though your son studied and graduated, whatever skills, talent, intelligence, knowledge, or any ability that enabled him to graduate is all from God alone. (Romans 11:36 For from him and through him and for him are all things.  To him be the glory forever! Amen.) writes that from God, through God, and to God are all things. God is the source, He is the means, and He is the end goal. God is the source of everything we have, whether that is finances, ability, or any other asset. Only because of God’s grace and mercy could your son study and graduate. That is why it is only fitting to bring glory back to God, who deserves all the thanksgiving, adoration, and praise.

When we pray a graduation prayer for our son, we also pray our hopes and whatever cares or concerns we have for him. For example, let’s say he just graduated high school. Perhaps one of his next endeavors is to get into a nice university and be accepted into a program that he desires or one that would greatly help him in his future career. That is already a hope or concern you can pray for. If he just graduated college or any post-graduate study, perhaps it is about finding a job, passing the board exam, being able to practice, etc.

Lastly, one of the best ways to pray for your son as he graduates is asking for a blessing for him. Basing your blessings for your son on the Scriptures is the best way. For example, in (2 Peter 3:18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.), the apostle Peter greets and hopes his letter recipients grow in Christ’s grace and knowledge. With that, you can use the Scripture as a prayer blessing like this:

2 Peter 3:18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.

Heavenly Father, I pray for my son that as he enters a new season of his life after graduation, may he grow in grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

How Can You Pray a Graduation Prayer for Your Son?

You can pray a graduation prayer by remembering the three aspects we mentioned. Pray by thanking God for all the graces and mercies He has shown your son, which enabled him to study and graduate. Remember to ascribe all the glory to God, for everything is because of Him. Then, pray about your hopes and concerns for your son as he enters another season or phase. Lastly, pray a blessing for him based on the Scriptures.

Of course, you pray all of those things in accordance with the unique circumstances of your son. What are the specific things you are thankful to God for your son? What hopes and concerns do you or your son have in line with his plans or endeavors? What specific verse in the Bible do you think would resonate with him the most as you offer a prayer of blessing for him? The answer to these questions would already make your prayer.

Below is an example of a graduation prayer for your son:

Father in heaven, I thank You for all the grace You have given to my son that enabled him to study well, understand everything he studied, and acquire the needed knowledge. Everything comes from You alone. I pray that You give him open doors for the companies he plans to apply to and the wisdom on whether to proceed into a career or pursue his studies. May he continue to walk in fear of You and the path of righteousness, being wise, always turning his feet away from evil, and always pondering Your path. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

While indeed it is your son’s day since he graduated, in the end, it is all about God. Remember that you are praying to give Him thanks, ask Him for your son’s continued successful endeavors, and bless your son in God’s grace. Ultimately, it is still about glorifying God, for He is the only One who deserves all the glory (1 Corinthians 10:31  So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.).
