A Different Serenity Prayer

Life is like a colorful painting. Just as there are bright colors that bring happiness, good times, rejoicing, and celebration, there are dark colors that bring fear, anxiety, sadness, and inner struggle. As our hearts experience those turmoils, we seek peace and comfort—serenity in our souls that brings calmness to our troubled hearts. There is no better source of serenity than God, our foundation and refuge.

Heavenly Father, you know the inner turmoils of my heart. I run to You, my strong tower and refuge, my rock on whom I can rest and lean. Bring peace and serenity to my troubled heart, Father. In Jesus name, I pray. Amen.

Finding Peace in Scripture

Whenever our hearts are troubled, we pray to God for peace. Indeed, God soothes us during difficult circumstances that cause us inner turmoil. While asking God to bring serenity to our hearts is a wonderful thing, there is a different way for us to pray to bring ourselves peace: by using the Scriptures.

In (Psalm 119:50 This is my comfort in my affliction: For thy word hath quickened me.), the psalmist writes that God’s Word is our comfort in times of affliction. It soothes, consoles, and gives us life when we are distressed. Psalm 119:105 also tells us that God’s Word is a lamp to our feet. Walking on a dark path can be very troubling to our hearts. Imagine the electricity in your house suddenly going out, and you are anxiously trying to find your way around. You might step on something, bump into furniture, or stumble. However, having a flashlight changes the situation, giving you peace and assurance as you make your way around. The same applies to us as we navigate through life; God’s Word brings us serenity as we continually journey. 2 Corinthians 1:3–4 also teaches us that God is the Father of mercies and comfort. He gives us grace and peace in times of affliction. That passage alone brings us rest and contentment whenever we are uneasy.

This is my comfort in my affliction: For thy word hath quickened me.)

How To Pray a Different Serenity Prayer Using the Bible

First, we should search the Bible for scripture that brings us comfort. There are numerous passages in the Bible that, when we read and ponder on, bring us stillness in trying times.

Take Romans 8:38–39 (ESV) for example: It tells us that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ. That is a very comforting and assuring passage that can settle us when we are troubled. No matter our circumstances, we are promised that God is not far and that we are not forsaken—no matter how dire the situation, we are not separated from God’s love in Christ.

Another example is Romans 8:28, which says that everything works together for the good of those who love God. It reassures us that we can rest on God, who is sovereign over every circumstance in our lives. Because He is sovereign, whether in fair or stormy weather, it all works for our good.

Now that we’ve found passages that soothe us, how can we use them in prayer for serenity? We must only remember them and confess them in prayer to bring ourselves peace. Recalling and reflecting on such scripture alone already brings us a sense of solace. We can take this even further and confess those passages in prayer, thanking God for them. Even though we aren’t explicitly praying to God to bring serenity to our hearts, simply meditating on and confessing these passages in prayer does just that.

Father in heaven, I thank You because no matter what situation I am in right now, neither trials nor tribulation nor my current circumstances can ever separate me from Your love. In Jesus name, I pray. Amen.
