Denying Yourself is a Choice to Make Daily

“It was by faith that Moses, when he grew up, refused to be treated as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. He chose to share the oppression of God’s people instead of enjoying the fleeting pleasures of sin.”

Heb. 11:24-25

For those walking as true sons and daughters of God, focusing our eyes on Jesus is crucial. We become effective and fruitful for His kingdom when we keep our eyes fixed on the Lord at all times. The Holy Spirit always points us towards the Son, testifying to us of His power and faithfulness, reminding us of who we are in Him. Yet our flesh causes us to lose sight of God and see only ourselves, creating turmoil and wickedness within us—adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contention, jealousy, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissension, heresy, envy, murder, drunkenness, revelry, and the like (Galatians 5:19-21).

That is why Jesus said in Matthew 16:24 that whoever wants to be His disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross to follow Him. Following Jesus has a cost, which includes pain, rejection, persecution, and even suffering for doing what is good. It is a choice that we have to make every day.

Take Hebrews 11:24-25, when Moses refused to be treated as a prince. He instead chose to suffer along with the Israelites. As a result, God powerfully used Him to deliver the Israelites out of Egypt. Many Israelite families were rescued from the oppression and slavery caused by the Egyptians because Moses chose to reject selfish ambition and power. He instead chose to follow God. Now, we have the Holy Spirit in us, who empowers us to follow the commands of Jesus and to say no to the works and influences of the flesh and of the enemy!

As you pray to God, simply declare His power, His sovereignty, and His awesomeness in your life. Give glory and thanks to the Holy Spirit, who continuously strengthens your faith as you follow Jesus Christ each day, while disempowering the work and influence of the flesh over your life. You are more than a conqueror through Christ Jesus!
