A Bartender’s Prayer

Being a bartender is perhaps one of the most controversial jobs, as it is always uncertain whether a Christian can or should be a bartender. Bartenders are primarily involved with liquor, serving drinks like cocktails to customers. The fact that alcohol is involved makes the bartender’s job controversial as to whether a Christian should even consider it. However, if we get to its root, the issue here is the liquor. Some Christians believe drinking is a sin, but that is not biblical in origin. No matter where you look in the Bible, it never states that drinking wine or alcohol is a sin. Many people in the Bible drank wine, which is alcohol. Even Jesus Himself drank wine in the Gospel accounts.

Father in heaven, give me wisdom and discernment as I contemplate my job as or desire to become a bartender. I pray that I will always submit to what You say is right and that I shall always choose to do that which will honor You. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Can Christians drink alcohol?

What the Bible warns of is being drunk with wine or alcohol. That is where it becomes a sin. Being drunk and addicted to alcohol is a pitfall that every Christian should avoid. That is why some Christians believe in never drinking alcohol to avoid any unnecessary temptation to drink more, resulting in drunkenness and, worse, becoming addicted to alcohol. They believe that avoiding alcohol protects others from stumbling, and protects the Christians themselves from sinning. However, this matter is up to every Christian to decide. If a Christian is confident that they can drink a small quantity of alcohol without being prone to drink more, which leads to becoming drunk or addicted to it, then there is no problem. They may want to be careful not to drink in front of someone who may easily stumble, which is an issue of spiritual maturity for that person.

Ephesians 5:18

And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

How do I pray over my work?

As a bartender, the one who drinks is not the bartender but the customer. That is where the circumstance becomes more complex. It may be okay to serve one drink to a customer who is satisfied with only one or a maximum of two and can control themselves. But it is different if a person comes to the bar and asks for enough alcohol to get drunk. Will you be willing to serve them alcohol as a bartender, knowing that it would contribute to someone else’s sin? Is it okay for you to just let that be? There are bars where the customers that go there don’t go to be drunk, but to hang out and meet with people, but there are also bars where people go specifically to be drunk. That is up to you to decide. Remember, to honor God means that there are times when the honorable thing to do is sacrifice something. As mentioned before, you should ask God for wisdom before deciding on this matter. Value honoring God more than your work and income. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you.

James 1:5

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

A Bartender’s Prayer

Here is one sample prayer to pray:

Father, give me the wisdom that I need to navigate through being a bartender and being a Christian. Guide me so that every decision I make is the decision that honors You. Suppose the place I work at is somewhere that I cannot work anymore because it does not honor You. In that case, I pray that You will guide me towards a workplace where I can do my job without contributing and overlooking the sin of drunkenness and addiction of others. Even as a bartender, help me be the salt and light and glorify You. Let the lordship of Christ reign in my job and ensure that I always submit to Him. Help me always to be rooted in the fear of You, for it is the beginning of wisdom. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Philippians 4:8

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

A Bartender’s Prayer

As a Christian, you must remember that what you do should not contribute to other people’s sins. If it does, it is better to find another job. The Bible tells us to always think of whatever is true, pure, lovely, honorable, just, and commendable and practice those things.
