How to Pray for Blessings

To pray to God for blessings, you must first know there are physical and spiritual blessings. Depending on what kind of blessing you want to ask for, know that it is always the Father’s will to bless you with both spiritual and material blessings. Matthew 7:11 says, If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father, which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him? God’s blessings can come in many forms—it can be family and friends who love and care for you, or it can be your job, business, and financial aspect. His blessings can also come in the form of His protection from harm, closed doors of opportunities that are not His will, an anointing and boldness to win souls, the compassion to serve His people, spiritual giftings to edify His Church, and so on. If you ask the Holy Spirit to open your eyes daily to God’s blessings, you’ll live a life of gratitude as everything becomes meaningful and special, even the little things in life. When you ask God for blessing, whether it’s spiritual or physical, He will bless you. You can pray in this manner:

Heavenly Father, thank You for all the blessings You have given me. You never run out of supply, and You always generously give to those who ask. I ask that you bless (state your request and be specific). I am blessed to have a Heavenly Father like You, Whom I can freely ask for things without feeling that I am asking for too much. That’s just Who You are. Thank You, God, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Moreover, while it isn’t wrong to pray to God for material blessings, know that the greater blessings are spiritual, such as a deeper relationship with God, a peaceful and joyful marriage, stronger faith under persecution, finding joy in suffering for Christ, etc. This is more than wealth, riches, and money. The more you think about God’s spiritual blessings, the more you’ll pray about these things, which are more lasting and eternal than the temporal pleasures material blessing can give. Jesus said in Matthew 6:19-21,  Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Make it a practice to seek heavenly things more than the treasures that can be found in this world, for the long-lasting blessings are those that no thief can come to steal, kill, and destroy.

Moreover, another way to pray for blessing effectively and powerfully is by being thankful to God for the things you have yet to receive. Jesus said that if you believe that you have received it, it shall be yours (see Mark 11:24). You can pray in this way:

Thank You, Father, for blessing me with (state whatever it is that you are desiring). It’s here, in my hands; may I bring glory to Your name as I testify of Your goodness in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Thank You, Father, for blessing me with (state whatever it is that you are desiring). It’s here, in my hands; may I bring glory to Your name as I testify of Your goodness in Jesus’ name. Amen.

What are some examples of blessings?

As discussed earlier, God’s blessings are both physical and spiritual. The material blessings are more obvious and visible to the eyes—food, shelter, family and friends, pets, business, jobs, etc. In contrast, spiritual blessings are discerned, and it takes spiritual sensitivity and knowledge of God’s Word to realize what God has bestowed. For instance, a father’s blessing is so important in the Bible. Jacob had to steal Esau’s blessing as the firstborn son, and so he deceived their father, Isaac. As a result, Esau wept bitterly (see Genesis 27). Thus, a parent’s blessing is one example through prayers and declaration of God’s will to their children. Moreover, another form of blessing in the Bible is being highly favored by God as His child. Because of what Jesus Christ has done, God blessed us abundantly in the spirit.

Ephesians 1:3-6 says,  Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, to the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.

We can also read about blessedness in Matthew 5:1-12, where Jesus preaches about the Beatitudes – the blessing of having a poor spirit and a pure heart; of mourning and being a peacemaker, merciful, and even persecuted for the sake of the Gospel – as all these have heavenly rewards.

Blessings are not just when good things happen in our lives. It’s more than that. As God’s Word says, you are blessed even when people persecute you because of your faith and suffering for doing good (see 1 Peter 3:17). God’s blessing is written in the Word of God—His promises, His faithfulness to fulfill them, the chance of repentance daily, and eternal life through Christ: John 3:16, For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
