How to Pray to God for Forgiveness

If there’s one thing we can indeed be grateful for in this lifetime, it is having and knowing such a compassionate, merciful, and loving God. Many people of different religions live in rejection, pain, limitations, and fears because of how they view their god. We are thankful that the Gospel we’ve heard through Jesus Christ showed us that God is love and that sin has already been dealt with on the cross. We can receive forgiveness from the Father, and by placing our faith in the Son, we are justified and made righteous in God’s sight. However, this doesn’t mean we are free from the baits and temptations of the enemy. And whenever we sin, we must ask God for forgiveness, keeping ourselves open to His Spirit’s leading, disciplines, and correction because He loves us. 

1 John 1:9 says, If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. How do you pray to God when you sin? You can pray in this manner:

Heavenly Father, I humbly come before Your throne. I conceal nothing before You, and I confess my heart to You, God. I have sinned against You. Please forgive me for (state your wrong and don’t be scared to be transparent before God; tell Him everything). I ask that You empower me in my walk with You as I discipline myself to abide in Your Word. Thank You for forgiving me and for loving me unconditionally. Your mercies are always new in the morning, and I thank You, God, for being so kind. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

As you ask God for forgiveness, it is important to show repentance by taking every effort and action to avoid repeating the same mistakes. When you spend more time communing with God, studying His Word, and fellowshipping with other lovers of Christ, Satan is less likely to come to attack you. Sometimes when your mind is idle, that is when the enemy starts to play with your thoughts. Also, when you spend more time with the world and doing worldly activities that feed your flesh, your inner man weakens. To avoid the bait of Satan and the temptations of the flesh, you must choose heavenly things over worldly things. You must choose to spend time with God and His Word more than anything else. 

While God offers forgiveness and gives us the grace to repent daily, He wants us to walk as mature and responsible sons and daughters of God who are impacting the world, advancing the Kingdom of God, and winning as many souls as we can to the Lord Jesus Christ by our lifestyle.

For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. Romans 8:13-14
