A Couple’s Wedding Prayer

One of the most important events in a person’s life is the day of their marriage. All their loved ones gather to celebrate their wedding day before the presence of God in Christ Jesus. This day marks the union of two lovers declared as husband and wife sealed by the Holy Spirit. Jesus said, “What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder” (Mark 10:9). Whether you are the one officiating a wedding, or simply a friend wanting to bless the couple with prayer on their wedding day, you may be wondering about a good wedding prayer. Here is a simple couple’s wedding prayer:

Heavenly Father, we thank You for this most important day of union of two hearts beating as one in Your name. You have joined these two souls together in love and have overcome many trials along the way. As they decide in their hearts to become husband and wife for the rest of their lives, I pray that Your hand of protection, love, grace, favors, and blessings be always upon them. As I lift up to you (NAME) and (NAME), may You bless them with happiness, joy, peace, righteousness, and fruit of the Spirit for the rest of their married life, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Heavenly Father, we thank You for this most important day of union of two hearts beating as one in Your name.

Another way you can pray and bless a couple on their wedding day is by reading or declaring a Scripture to them that may speak of love, life, and power unto their marriage. Here are some Bible verses that are great for weddings and marriage:

1. 1 Corinthians 13:4-8

Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.

2. 1 Corinthians 13:13

And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

3. 1 Peter 4:8

And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.

Heavenly Father, we thank You for this most important day of union of two hearts beating as one in Your name.

…I found him whom my soul loveth…

7. 1 John 3:18

My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.

What is a good wedding prayer?

There are no good or bad wedding prayers, but only prayers offered in faith and love. If you are looking for a prayer that is great for a wedding, it is any prayer that blesses the couple, magnifies God above their marriage, and urges the couple to put their hope, trust, faith in God through Christ Jesus. The content can include declarations from Scripture passages that speak of love and blessings for the couple. There are many different ways to express a wedding prayer depending on how you construct the words, the opening, blessing, and closing.

Here is a simple wedding prayer structure that may guide you in creating the content of your wedding prayer for the couple:

Opening:

  1. Acknowledgement and reverence of the Heavenly Father in Christ Jesus.
  2. Gratefulness to God for the presence of the Bride and the Groom, as well as the presence of everyone gathered.
  3. A few general introductions about weddings or the reason everyone is gathered, or you can begin with a Scripture with a few exhortations on what marriage is about, for the sake of the hearers, while also imparting faith on the bride and groom.

Blessing:

  1. You can then start blessing the bride and the groom with happiness, lots of love, joy, peace, and the presence of God throughout their marriage.
  2. You can also declare protection, patience, gentleness, and all the fruit of the Spirit to the couple in their times of trials, challenges and temptations.
  3. You can also pray for fruitfulness in the womb and encourage a powerful generation of Christ lovers to be raised by the couple.

Closing:

End the prayer by glorifying God above all things, in the couple’s lives and in the wedding ceremony that marks the beginning of a new chapter for the newlywed couple in Jesus’ name.

As you make a wedding prayer, allow the Holy Spirit to guide you. It will indeed bless the couple and all those present at the wedding.

What do married couples pray for?

As the bride and groom become a married couple, they start a new chapter of life as husband and wife. They are now working as a team, working as one to shape their married life, while keeping their unique individualities, personal space, and faith in God, both as a couple and as individuals. There are many things that newlywed couples can pray for:

  1. You can pray for a baby if you want to have children right away.
  2. If there are pending balances or bills due to the wedding, you can pray to God for financial provision.
  3. You may pray for each other as husband and wife.
  4. You can also ask God for other things regarding finances as you plan to expand your family.
  5. You can pray for God’s presence, protection, and anointing to come upon your marriage.
  6. You can pray for your spiritual lives as a newlywed couple.
  7. You can also pray for protection and guidance as you both take on this new journey together.

There are many other things that married couples pray for, whether they are newlyweds or have been married for a long time. What matters is that Christ remains at the center of the marriage—no matter what.

May God be glorified in every wedding and marriage taking place in the name of Jesus. May His Kingdom advance on Earth through couples who are rooted in Christlikeness and the love of the Father!
